Asian Games: Somdev Devvarman wins seventh gold for India

GUANGZHOU: Somdev Devvarman on Tuesday created history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal in the men's singles tennis event of the Asian Games after outplaying top seed and world number 44 Denis Istomin 6-1 6-2 in the lop-sided summit clash.

With this win, Somdev won his second gold from the tennis competition, and seventh for India, having already captured yellow metal in the men's doubles with Sanam Singh.

No Indian player had played in the gold-medal match in the men's singles before Somdev, world number 106, and the country had three bronze medals to show so far at the Games.

Leander Paes ( Hiroshima in 1994), Mahesh Bhupathi ( Bangkok in 1998) and Prahlad Srinath (Bangkok in 1998) had won those three bronze medal in men's singles.

In total, Somdev won three medals at this edition of the Games as he had earlier won a bronze in team event as well.

India rounded off its tennis campaign with five medals, two more than what the country had got at the Doha Asian Games in 2006.

At Doha, Leander Paes had won two gold medals - in men's doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi and in mixed doubles with Sania Mirza.

Sania had won a sliver in the women's singles. The final match between Somdev and Istomin never rose to expected heights as the Uzbek was erratic and failed to curb his unforced errors, which helped Somdev's cause.

The Indian broke the Uzbek twice in the opening set to take a comfortable 5-0 and served it out in the seventh game, having dropped his own in the sixth.

Dambulla: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni defended his woefully out-of-form batsmen, saying he team just needs one individual spark of brilliance for the entire line-up to click in the must-win tri-series match against New Zealand.

"You want one batsman to play a big innings in all games, whichever the batsman may be, especially on these kind of wickets. It can be termed as individual brilliance because you have one batsman batting through and the others batting around him," Dhoni said in a pre-match press conference.

"It`s more about the mindset because in one-day cricket you`re so used to going after and hitting the bowlers right from the first delivery. It`s not only in the sub-continent, throughout the world you see wickets are a lot flatter now, especially for the one-dayers," he explained.
"If you talk about the batting collapses, it`s happened twice in three games. But if it is said that this is the batting strength of our side, I won`t agree with that. One thing we can`t deny is that we have had two batting failures and we have to rectify the problem, get on the wicket and try to score some runs," he added.

Dhoni said the key to success on the pitches here is to play steadily for at least 20 overs before cutting loose.

"To give respect to the bowlers for the first 10 overs, and the next 40 overs is yours. This is one of those venues where you have to prolong the respect for bowlers by another 10 overs. If you don`t lose too many wickets for 20 overs, then you can really dictate the bowlers and can have your own game plan set after that," he said.
The crushing previous defeats to New Zealand (by 200 runs) and Sri Lankan (by eight wickets) have been hard to take, admitted Dhoni but insisted that the team can recover.

"As a team, we are disappointed about it. But if you see, all the matches have been one-sided, which suggests if you lose too many wickets early, there is a big batting collapse. We have seen it happen throughout the tournament," he said.
"The batsmen are trying to work out their plans as to what needs to be done. They are not getting out to rash shots. They are trying to battle through and there are times when you can`t do that. Dambulla: India were handed the worst ODI defeat in terms of balls remaining by Sri Lanka here and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni conceded nothing worked right for his side in the tri-series match except for the fact that Yuvraj Singh returned among runs.

"Nothing worked today. We didn`t get the kind of start we needed and so not enough runs for the bowlers to defend after batting first. Sri Lankan bowlers bowled in the right channels and pushed us into making the mistakes," Dhoni said after his side`s eight-wicket defeat.
India now face a must-win situation against New Zealand in their last match to enter Saturday`s final and Dhoni admitted that it is now or never for his side.

"Next game is like a semi-final now. We have to do well in that match or we have to pack up and go back home," the Indian skipper said.

He said the only positive thing India derived from today`s match was Yuvraj Singh, who returned to the playing XI after missing a match due to dengue fever.
According to News, Yuvraj was the sole Indian batsmen to produce some resistance before the disciplined Lankan seam bowling attack with a gritty 64-ball 38.

"Yuvraj batted well. That was the positive thing. He is a crucial man at the middle order. He is the kind of guy who can graft for runs and also hit big shots. His performance today must have boosted his confidence," Dhoni said.

Meanwhile, Dhoni`s counterpart Kumar Sangakkara said his bowlers set up the platform for the easy win, which ensured Sri Lanka`s place in the final of the tri-series.

"We would have batted first had we won the toss. But our bowlers, from the first ball on, bowled great lines and great lengths. We have got a varied attack," he said.

He also said that opening with the batting Mahela Jayawardene was a tactical decision which paid off.

"We opened with Mahela Jayawardene because sometimes he is wasted in the middle order. If he bats that well, we can let him bat freely at the top. This might be something we might see more often," Sangakkara said.

Man-of-the-match Thisara Perera, who notched up his maiden five-wicket haul today, said, "I really enjoyed this match, these are my best figures. Hopefully I can carry on from this performance. I also work hard on batting and hard hitting too."

Colombo: Taking serious note of the unsporting act by its players, the Sri Lankan cricket board on Wednesday suspended spinner Suraj Randiv for one match and fined Tillakaratne Dilshan fifty percent of his match fees.

Dilshan was held guilty of provoking Randiv to bowl the no-ball that prevented Indian opener Virender Sehwag from reaching his century.

Randiv, whose one match suspension means that he would not be able to play tomorrow’s game against the Kiwis, was also docked hundred percent of his match fees.

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara has also been advised to make sure that repetition of such incidents do not occur, where disrepute will be brought to the game.

“Sri Lanka Cricket is extremely proud of its team and their achievements over the years. It is of paramount importance to maintain the discipline of the Gentlemen’s game, especially with Sri Lanka Cricket being winners of the ‘ICC Spirit of the Game’ award for two consecutive years,” a press release issued by the board on its website said.

“As such Sri Lanka Cricket has taken a stern decision against Suraj Randiv and T M Dilshan, for their actions during the 3rd ODI of the Micromax Tri-Series held on August 16, 2010, between India, in Dambulla, wherein Virender Sehwag was deprived of scoring his century due to the delivery of a no ball by Suraj Randiv,” the release further said.
A six-member committee of Sri Lanka Cricket met earlier in the day to take action on the recommendations of team manager who probed the `no-ball` controversy during the home side`s tri-series match against India on Monday.

According to sources, the meeting focused on the video footages of the last three balls of India`s run chase in the tri-series match which the visiting side won by six wickets.

Sri Lanka Cricket interim chairman DS de Silva headed the committee while his secretary Nishantha Ranatunga and treasurer Sujeewa Rajapakse and three other SLC officials were the other members.
Sehwag was just one short of his 13th ODI hundred when off-spinner Suraj Randiv, who had not bowled a no ball in the Test or ODI series this season, bowled one which was hit by the opener for a six.

However, it did not count because the no ball amounted to India`s winning run leaving Sehwag on an unbeaten 99.
Embarrassed by the `no-ball` controversy, Sri Lanka Cricket yesterday initiated an inquiry into the incident by team manager Anura Tennekoon even as the bowler and top SLC officials offered apologies to calm the furore.

The apologies prompted the Indian team management to declare the episode a "closed chapter" while the BCCI also made it clear that it would not pursue the case any further.

New Delhi: Against the backdrop of a spate of controversies surrounding the Delhi Games, Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell arrived here Tuesday night on a two-day visit.
However, he refused to comment on the corruption claims in CWG.

Fennell will inspect various stadiums, which have been hit by construction delays, and meet government officials to get an update on security for the October 3-14 mega event.
Fennell's visit also gains importance because a few of the Commonwealth nations have raised doubts about security during the event and they would be eagerly waiting for a report from the CWF chief to take a final decision.

Regarding the venues, the Organizing committee vice-chairman Randhir Singh has already that assured all the stadiums are in "top-class News" and will be ready within a week's time.
"We checked each and everything minutely. Although minor works still remains but everything will be completed in a week's time. By August 25 all the things will be done," Singh, who is also secretary-general of Indian Olympic Association, said yesterday.

During his visit to the capital in March earlier this year, Fennell had said that he was satisfied with preparations but with just 45 days to go for the Games, it remains to be seen how he reacts this time around.

Fennell was also very concerned after a spate of corruption charges were levelled on the organising committee, especially its chairman Suresh Kalmadi and the CWF chief is expected to seek a lot of answers from the OC in this regard.
Apart from an update on the progress of the venues, Fennell will also seek a report on the fitness, fire, health and safety from government departments.

The organising committee's deal with AM Films during the Queen's Baton Relay in London had opened a can of worms, putting Kalmadi in the eye of a storm with allegations of financial irregularities levelled on him and his colleagues.

Dambulla: Lashing out at Sri Lankan spinner Suraj Randiv for deliberately bowling a no-ball and depriving him of a well deserved century, India opener Virender Sehwag on Monday said such behaviour was unacceptable.

Sehwag was left stranded on 99 when Randiv bowled a no ball and the Indian batsman could not complete his century despite hitting a six during a tri-series match here.

"If there is a player on 99, it does not mean that you bowl a no-ball and give away four byes. That has no place in good cricket," Sehwag said at the post-match press conference.
Sehwag said he was sure the no-ball was bowled to deny him the century.

"Why should I look at the video, it was done deliberately. Randiv has not bowled no-balls in one-dayers also. When I was in 99 why was a no-ball bowled. It was not a small margin no-ball but one foot long. I don`t know whether the captain was consulted or someone else was consulted," he said.

Sehwag said the Lankans have done this to Sachin Tendulkar also in the past.

"Sri Lankans did it with Sachin (Tendulkar) also when he was on 99 in the Cuttack match. That happens in cricket. Bowlers try to do that when batsmen are on 99."

Dambulla: Superb bowling by the bowlers followed by pragmatic batting by Upul Tharanga helped Sri Lanka beat New Zealand by 3 wickets in the tri-series here on Friday.
Upul Tharanga slammed a fine fifty to ensure that Sri Lanka don’t collapse after the fall of two veteran batsmen-Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Tharanga made 70 off 109 balls.
Tharanga, playing a perfect shit-anchor role, hit nine fours during his stay at the crease.
Chasing an easy target of 193 for victory, Sri Lanka, despite losing Tilakratne Dilshan early, crossed 100-run mark with the loss of two wickets.
Kumar Sangakkara played well for his 48 but he was undone by Scott Styris just when it seemed that the second wicket pair of Sangakkara and Tharanga would seal an easy victory for Sri Lanka. The pair added 85 runs.

The report found that the games Organising Committee had awarded the sponsorship deal to Melbourne-based Sports Marketing and Management (SMAM) at a very cheap price, official sources said on Wednesday night.
The sponsorship deal has since been scrapped on grounds of 'non-performance', a claim that has been refuted by the Australian firm, which said the charges against it are "imaginary".
UK's Fast Track Sales Ltd was chosen as the consultant for the broadcasting rights.
The inspection of the CWG Organising Committee was done by field officers between November 2009 and January 2010. The inspection report has been sent to the Committee for its comments and it was not immediately known if a response has been made.
It was pointed out that the report related to an inspection done by field officers and it was not an audit report. It was also said that the final report may differ from the findings of the inspection report.
The sources said there was also a mention of Maxxam International in the interim report which raised questions on the procedures adopted for the Queen's Baton Relay, held in London last year.
This deal for organising the event went to Maxxam which reportedly had emerged as the highest bidder.

India crashed to a humiliating 200-run defeat in the first match of the triangular ODI series against New Zealand with a pathetic bowling and batting display here on Tuesday.
After the Kiwis put up a competitive 288 on the board, riding on skipper Ross Taylor (95) and Scott Styris (89), India suffered an inexplicable batting collapse to bundle out for a paltry 88 in just 29.3 overs

In what turned out to be a totally lop-sided contest, only three Indian batsmen could score double figures as the Kiwis ripped through the young batting lineup to launch their campaign on a high.
It was a commanding show by the New Zealanders who relied on a 190-run stand for the fourth wicket between Taylor and Styris before Daryl Tuffey (3/34) and Kyle Mills (2/26) and Jacob Oram (2/15) shot out India to complete a convincing win.

Chasing 289 to win, openers Dinesh Karthik (14) and Virender Sehwag (19) made a watchful start but New Zealand struck twice in as many deliveries to get rid of the openers and reduce India to 39 for two in 7.1 overs.
Sehwag was the first to go when he failed to negotiate a short ball aimed at his body by Mills as the ball kissed his glove and landed safely at wicketkeeper Gerath Hopkins' hands.

Karthik then followed suit when he played Tuffey's delivery down the wrong line and missed the ball, which struck on his pads in front of the wicket.

Sharma, brought in to bolster the middle order, ended up giving catching practice to first slip of Tuffey's outside off stump delivery.

Raina also followed his partner and edged one straight to second slip to award Tuffey his third wicket of the day.

The 32-year-old seamer came to haunt India again in the 14th over when his direct throw found skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni short of wicket as India looked down the barrel at 53/5.
Yuvraj and Ravindra Jadeja tried to stem the rot but Andy Mckay removed the former in the 17th over and eight balls later Praveen Kumar was also sent packing by Jacob Oram as India stared at an impending defeat.

Earlier, New Zealand had a disastrous start, collapsing to 28 for three in 6.5 overs but Taylor (95) and Styris (89) rescued the innings and helped New Zealand to reach 288.

Newball bowlers Praveen Kumar (3/43) and Ashish Nehra (4/47) shared seven wickets between them to strangle the New Zealand top and lower order and helped India bowl out their rivals inside 300.

New Zealand had a tottering start, losing three wickets inside seven overs with the scoreboard reading just 28 but Taylor and Styris stemmed the rot and anchored the innings to safety after electing to bat first.

Openers Peter Ingram (12) and MJ Guptill (11) started off well, clubbing a couple of fours but new ball bowler Praveen Kumar removed the latter in the third over to draw first blood for India.

Kumar's late away going delivery got the edge of Guptill's blade as skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni completed a simple catch to leave New Zealand at 15 for one at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.

Ashish Nehra then got into the act and removed Ingram in the sixth over. Nehra's seaming away ball kissed Ingram's bat and Dhoni made no mistake as India reduced their rivals to 27 for two.

Kumar struck again in the seventh over when his incoming delivery pitched on the middle stump and before Kane Williamson (0) could play it, the ball moved away at the last instant and cleaned his off stump.

With their innings lying in shambles, Taylor and Styris started the rebuilding process and picked up ones and twos and slammed occasional boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Mithun was on their firing line in the 16th over, when the youngster was hit for consecutive boundaries by Taylor and Styris at cover and point respectively.

Taylor then repeated the same treatment to Ravindra Jadeja in the 18th over when he hit him for a couple of fours both at backward point.

In the 21st over, Taylor picked Pragyan Ojha for a boundary when he cut him to clear the ropes at the backward boundary.

Styris, meanwhile, slammed consecutive boundaries of Ojha and smashed Jadeja over midwicket, before reaching his fifty in the 30th over.

Leh floods: 33 Army men swept way to PoK?

New Delhi: Thirty-three soldiers including three JCOs, deployed along the Line of Control near Siachen glacier, are feared to have been washed away to PoK in flash floods in Ladakh and help of Pakistan has been sought to trace them.

A senior army officer said today that the jawans, who were manning a post near Turtok along the Line of Control (LoC), still remained untraced after they faced the fury of a swollen Shyok river on the same day when Leh was hit by flash floods following a devastating cloudburst on Friday last.

The Army has now sought the help of Pakistani authorities to help rescue the 33 personnel of 15 Bihar infantry regiment as it fears that they may have been swept away towards Pakistan-occupied Kashmir(PoK) in the deluge, the officer said. more

Though the 33 soldiers, including three junior commissioned officers, were well-trained to negotiate the conditions, the Army has not been able to trace them even 48 hours after the incident, the officer said.
"The soldiers are feared to have been swept away towards PoK and we have sought help from Pakistan to trace them," the officer said.

New Delhi/Leh: Twenty bodies were on Saturday pulled out from slush and debris in Leh town ravaged by flash floods, raising the toll to 132 even as rescuers intensified operations in the high altitude terrain to search for 600 missing people.
Six Indian Air Force aircraft carrying relief material, rescue workers and doctors landed here today to provide succour to the people of the region affected by Thursday night's cloudbursts and freak rains.

"We have recovered 132 bodies so far and at least 370 are injured. The number of missing is being ascertained," State Police Chief Kuldeep Khoda said, adding the toll may go up.
Sources fear that the death toll could cross over 500 as several remote villages were yet to be accessed by rescue teams. Thousands were left homeless.

"The Indo Tibetan Border Police has retrieved 30 dead bodies. We have rescued 100 victims from under the debris today. Three relief camps have also been opened up since yesterday," ITBP spokesperson Deepak Pandey said.

The General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF) and ITBP are plugging the breaches on Leh Highway, he said.

Authorities said that the Army had suffered losses in Turtuk area. Some of the villages along the Chang La pass, world's second highest motorable road, were also believed to have been washed away in the torrential rains.
Union Minister Farooq Abdullah reached the area this morning from Kashmir. Later two of his cabinet colleagues -- Ghulam Nabi Azad and Prithviraj Chavan -- also reached here after making an earlier unsuccessful attempt to land.
Home Secretary G K Pillai said in New Delhi that five to six civilian flights are likely to take off for Leh tomoorrow to bring back people including foreign tourists stranded there.
Satellite telecom equipment is being flown here to restore the mobile and telephone connectivity in the city and adjoining areas, where communication services have snapped.

"The Tri-service Disaster Management Coordination Group today decided to send special service aircraft to carry 19 VSATs (Very Small Aperture Terminals) and other equipment of BSNL to Leh so that mobile and telecom connectivity could be restored there," a Defence Ministry official said .
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had yesterday visited the affected areas and made an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
Army spokesman Colonel J S Brar told PTI that rescue operations which had slowed down due to heavy rains have picked up again.

The final day of the Test series lived up to its billing with India emerging victorious in a gripping contest to level the series and confound those who had doubted their depleted line-up. VVS Laxman battled the pressure and an injured back and, with support from Sachin Tendulkar and Suresh Raina, countered a probing spell from Suraj Randiv and reached his 16th century to seal a memorable victory against the odds - India's fourth-highest successful chase in Tests.
India needed a recovery each time Laxman stepped out to bat this series, and he delivered once again in what appeared to be his most comfortable outing in a situation that was perhaps the most challenging. The nerves of a tough chase were more evident in his partners, who offered chances and survived moments of edginess, as opposed to Laxman, around whose solidity his team's hopes centered.
Laxman just seemed to have more time than the rest to play his shots, and picked gaps in the spread-out fields with comfort during a constant search for singles and twos. The wrist worked its charm early in his innings with a couple of delightful drives off Ajantha Mendis on either side of the pitch, and he latched on anything short, pulling Lasith Malinga for two boundaries behind square. Randiv's extra bounce was neutralised with a quick adaptation to his varying lengths and the use of soft hands. Mendis' googlies were read early, and Malinga's slightly wayward line was dominated with flicks, glances and pulls along with a safe negotiation of his intermittent yorkers. As India approached a win, Laxman moved towards his century with sublime timing, easing the spinners through covers, and brought up the landmark with a tickle to fine leg.
Randiv was the most threatening of Sri Lanka's bowlers and assumed the role of lead spinner in just his second Test. He pushed the ball quick and delivered from a high angle, making him more potent on a track generating bounce. Randiv's three wickets on the second day had put Sri Lanka ahead and they would have been in a position of control had an initially patchy Tendulkar not been dropped at forward short leg. He attacked from round the wicket, targeted the rough and got the ball to spit from a middle-and-off line. India's approach throughout the day had been positive and Tendulkar's hunt for runs, though reflecting his determination to keep India on track, kept Randiv interested. Tendulkar closed the face often, used the paddle, made room to cut Randiv from the stumps and even stepped out of his crease. He inside-edged Randiv to one that spun in but Tillakaratne Dilshan failed to hold on to a straightforward chance, a moment Tendulkar shrugged off soon enough with a lovely off-drive next ball.

COLOMBO: India's renowned batsmen were handed a stern challenge to secure a series-levelling win in the final Test after Sri Lanka fought hard with both bat and ball on Friday.

India, set a victory target of 257, ended the rousing fourth day's play on 53/3 in their second innings, following a triple strike by lanky off-spinner Suraj Randiv.

Randiv, sharing the new ball with Lasith Malinga, had in-form Virender Sehwag caught in the slips in his first over and later bowled Rahul Dravid off the inside edge for seven.

He then dismissed opener Murali Vijay for 27 to a disputed catch at short-leg by Mahela Jayawardene, which was referred to the television umpire before the batsman was ruled out.

Sachin Tendulkar, the world's leading run-getter playing a record 169th Test match, kept India's hopes alive with a watchful unbeaten 11.

Nightwatchman Ishant Sharma was on two, with India needing 204 more runs on the final day with seven wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka made 267 in their second innings after a spectacular century partnership for the ninth wicket between Thilan Samaraweera and Ajantha Mendis.

India's spinners had sparked a dramatic collapse in the morning session as five wickets fell for 24 runs to reduce the hosts to 87/7 in an hour's play.

But the last three wickets added 180 runs to frustrate the Indians as Samaraweera followed his century in the first innings with a fighting 83 in the company of tailenders.

Samaraweera added 38 runs for the eighth wicket with Lasith Malinga (15) and Sri Lanka's record ninth-wicket stand of 118 with Mendis (78).

The duo flayed the Indian attack for two hours and 32 minutes before India broke the partnership in the first over with the second new ball.

A sporting wicket, stylish batting, quality bowling, good catching and accurate umpiring are the main ingredients of a good day in Test cricket. On Thursday, in a must-win match for India, poor umpiring spoiled the day's intriguing proceedings, thanks to a hattrick of howlers by umpire RodTucker.

The first came in the second over of the day. Three balls after Virender Sehwag pulled Suraj Randiv through mid-wicket to reach his 21st century, he was trapped plumb before the wicket. Randiv, bowling around the wicket, struck Sehwag's pads well below the knee roll and Tucker should have raised his finger. But he didn't.
The decision didn't cost Sri Lanka much since Randiv, bowling the leg-stump line with a strong on-side field, soon enticed Sehwag into clearing the offside. The batsman tried to create room but the ball came on slower than he expected, and it went straight to Chanaka Welegedara at mid-off.
Though the impact of Tucker's first error was negated, his last two blunders could play a huge role in deciding the eventual outcome of the game. After the Indian tail wagged to help the side overtake Sri Lanka's first innings total of 425, Randiv, who bowled unchanged in the first session, was brought back into the attack.
And the offie struck in the first over of a new spell. With the ball hitting Abhimanyu Mithun's (46) thigh pads on the way to Mahela Jayawardene at leg slip, Tucker should have figured out that there was no contact with the wood. But he upheld the loud appeal.
Half an hour later, came the worst decision. Randiv struck Ishant Sharma (8) on his pads, and the ball lobbed into Tharanga Paranavitana's palms at forward short-leg. A loud shout was first turned down, and just as the bowler was turning back, Tucker raised his finger. It's high time the International Cricket Council makes the decision review system mandatory for all Tests.
Nevertheless, a stiff resistance from India's lower order overshadowed Tucker's poor show. Once Sachin Tendulkar became Malinga's 100th Test victim in the opening over of the day and Sehwag perished soon after, it was up to VVS Laxman and Suresh Raina to put on a solid partnership.
Just when the right and left-hand combination raised hopes of a big lead, both fell to Ajantha Mendis in quick succession after adding 105 for the fifth wicket. When Mahendra Singh Dhoni (18), who was again hit on his injured middle finger, returned soon after, India were in danger of conceding a big first innings lead. But Mithun and Amit Mishra (40) batted sensibly to give India an 11-run lead. With Sehwag getting rid of both the openers, Lanka finished the day with a lead of 34 runs and eight wickets in hand.

End of an era, Murali signs off with 800 wickets

Galle: Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan became the first man on earth to claim 800 Test wickets in the history of the game. Murali on Thursday achieved the feat when he dismissed Pragyan Ojha with a perfect ball to mark his last Test with a record that no one on the planet had ever set before and one that may not be eclipsed anytime in the near future.

Murali took the last Indian wicket to help Sri Lanka bowl India out for 338. Sri Lanka now need 95 runs to win the Galle Test and take 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

Murali, who retires after this Test match, needed eight wickets before the match to achieve the landmark. With the Galle Test providing a perfect platform for his retreat, Murali did not succumb to the emotion of playing the last match, which played havoc to even a legend like Don Bradman.

It’s not an easy task, but Murali bowled beautifully and picked up 5 wickets in the first innings. It has been a great match for the legendary off-spinner who triggered an Indian batting collapse with a performance in the last match that will be etched in the memories of cricket lovers for the exhibition of great spin bowling, an art which is fast fading away in the age of T20 cricket.
     Born in Kandy, Sri Lanka on April 17, 1972, Muralitharan is cricket`s greatest wicket-taker in both Test cricket and one-day internationals and one of the most successful bowlers in the game.
The legality of the 38-year-old off-spinner`s bowling action had split opinions but was cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1996 and again in 1999.
      The eldest of four sons, Muralitharan began cricket as a medium pace bowler before switching to off-spin when he was 14 years-old. He made his Test debut aged 20 against Australia on August 28, 1992, claiming three wickets for 141 runs.
A year later he captured his first five-wicket haul in Tests against South Africa with figures of 5-104.
Against New Zealand in 1995 his 19 wickets in Sri Lanka`s 2-1 series victory proved his match-winning qualities on any surface.
On March, 16, 1997 he became the first Sri Lankan to reach 100 Test wickets. In January 1998, he took his first 10-wicket haul against Zimbabwe in the first Test.
      In August that year, Muralitharan produced career best figures of 16-220 in a one-off Test against England. On March 16, 2004 he became the fastest and youngest bowler to reach 500 wickets during the second Test against Australia in Kandy. Muralitharan had reached the landmark just four days after Australia`s Shane Warne had done so on the fifth day of the first Test.
      Having tussled with Warne for the leading Test-wicket taker status in the following years, Muralitharan reclaimed the record in December 3, 2007 against England with his 709th wicket.

Naxals strike in Dantewada, many cops feared killed

RAIPUR: About 70 police personnel were on Wednesday reported missing in Chhattisgarh forests amid a major gunfight between heavily-armed Maoists and police in Dantewada area.

The gunfight began when Maoists attacked a search party of the state police in a thickly forested area of Gumiapal, close to Kirandul, about 420 km south of capital Raipur, an iron ore mining facility of India's top iron ore producer NMDC Ltd.
About 70 police personnel are missing," a source at the police headquarters here said.

"Additional forces have been rushed to the site. The gun-battle is on amid heavy rain. I can't comment anything now about casualty or injury but it's a major fight," the police officer told IANS. A strong contingent of District Force (DF) and Koya Commando comprising of special police officers (SPOs) had gone into the forests around 11 a.m. after police were tipped-off about the presence of a unit headed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) commander Ganesh Uike in Gumiapal forests, state IG Police, Rajesh Mishra, told reporters.
     "Police headquarters is awaiting details about the encounter which is still on. Our brave policemen are giving them (Maoists) a very tough fight," said Mishra.
The Maoists attacked a police party with around 80 personnel this morning around 8 am, said IG Police Rajesh Mishra. The encounter is taking place in the forests of Goomiapal, near Kirandul, 40 kilometres from Dantewada, Mishra added.
     "A police party was following a military company of the CPI (Maoist) led by their senior commander Ganesh Uike," said Mishra.
     The incident occurred when a joint team of STF, district police force and Koya Commando had gone for patrolling from Kirandool police station area, police sources said.
     The encounter began around 11.30, said unconfirmed reports. No information is available on the casualties. The party included personnel from Chhattisgarh police, Special Task Force and Koya Commandos.
Heavy rain is taking place in the area, making it difficult for reinforcements and the rescue team to reach. Additional CRPF reinforcements have been rushed to the encounter site, sources in the paramilitary force said.
     The incident took place under the Kirandul police station area in the district when a joint team of STF, district police force and Koya Commandos had gone for patrolling.
On April 6, 75 CRPF personnel and a state policeman were killed in Dantewada after over 100 Naxals ambushed the patrol party and looted weapons.
   In another incident on June 29, a large number of heavily-armed Maoists, perched on a hilltop, had opened fire with automatic weapons on a 63-member security contingent which was returning on foot from road opening duty, killing 26 CRPF personnel in Narayanpur district. The dead included a CRPF Assistant Commandant Jatin Gulati.

It all started when a bunch of intoxicated youngsters had a go at Ishant Sharma, who was at the boundary. Then, it was Yuvraj’s turn. Benched for the match, Yuvraj was greeted with chants of “Water boy, water boy why ain’t you playing,” as he served drinks to his teammates.
Though Yuvraj restrained himself, he lost his cool after “a fan pointed a finger in a wrong manner towards him”, according to an eyewitness.
Following this, Yuvraj reported the incident to the team management and local authorities present at the ground.
“The crowd was trying to misbehave with the player. The police was asked to intervene and the situation was brought under control. Yuvi was not at fault, he didn’t try to provoke the crowd. I was sitting next to him when it happened and I can tell you they were trying to provoke the player,” team manager, Ranjib Biswal, said.
“It’s human tendency to react to situations when you are repeatedly provoked. The police took the spectators out and we will definitely lodge a complaint,” said Biswal.
The spectators did not spare Suresh Raina and commentator, Tony Greig, taunting them after the draw of stumps.
Tony Perera, CEO of TUCAC, assured that corrective measures would be taken on Wednesday.
“Taverners was built to add lustre to the club and not for fans to get intoxicated and behave in a way that is detrimental to cricket,” said Perera.
“Just a few people don’t mean the whole club should be held responsible. I am looking into the details of who these people were. Necessary action will definitely be taken tomorrow,” he said.
